Hurricane Relief
In quick succession, hurricanes have battered the Caribbean, the American Deep South, and Southeast Texas. You’ve seen the news coverage. Whole islands have been effectively flattened, homes flooded beyond repair, and thousands displaced. Recovery has already begun, and if you’re looking for a way to help, here’s where you can start:
Become a volunteer
If you’re local to the areas affected by Harvey and Irma, then consider volunteering!
- Visit the National VOAD website to find out how to help relief efforts in Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.
- Search for opportunities at VolunteerMatch.org. Get in contact with local and state organizations to find out how you can help charity and supply drive efforts that are taking place near you.
Donate to a charity
Volunteering your time isn’t the only option for helping hurricane relief. Recovery efforts are expensive, and every donated dollar is important and impactful!
- Donate to the Florida Disaster Fund
- Give to National VOAD member organizations
- Use Charity Navigator to find charities to support and to vet charities you’re looking to donate to. You can get a deep look at non-profit organizations to see how they spend donated funds. Look for 4-star rated charities that spend 90% or more directly on the programs and aid they administer.
With Recovery Comes Hope
Barbuda, Key West, St. Thomas, Houston, the Bahamas, and so many more. These places and their people— they will heal. Recovery has already begun, and there’s a lot of hard work ahead. But there’s also hope, and that’s something we can all use a little of, every day.
24 hours is a whole lot of moments, and that’s all the time it took for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma to destroy homes and livelihoods.
Don’t take your moments for granted.
